Fascinating facts about the Gray Fox

• The gray fox is the only canid in North America that regularly climbs trees — it shimmies up vertical trunks using its semi-retractable claws and flexed spine, sometimes 15 metres high, to hunt birds, raid nests, or escape predators. No other wild dog on the continent does this. They evolved this trick at least 7 million years ago, a fork in the evolutionary path that separated them from every other member of the dog family.
• Half a gray fox's diet is fruit — persimmons, grapes, and berries become staple foods in autumn, sometimes making up 80% of what they eat in peak season. This makes them the most frugivorous canid in North America, a taste preference shaped by the forests they inherited and the seasons they navigate. Most people don't realize foxes aren't obligate carnivores at all.
• A gray fox's tail is striped like a raccoon's and topped with a black mane that runs down its spine — features so unlike other North American canids that early naturalists thought it was a cat. The black stripe, called a dorsal crest, darkens when they're stressed or threatened, a visible signal of mood that their closest relatives simply cannot produce.
• Gray foxes were nearly extinct in the eastern United States by the 1930s, hunted and poisoned as pests and for fur, until a century-long rebound saw them recolonize New England and reach Canada in the 2000s — a recovery that outpaced every other native predator. Their return signals that forests are healing and prey populations are rebounding across eastern North America.
• A gray fox's musk gland is positioned on top of its tail, not underneath like most canids — when threatened, it raises its tail and releases a musky scent cloud toward the threat, a defensive strategy borrowed more from skunks than wolves. This is why early Native American and colonial trappers sometimes called them fox-skunks, a name that actually described their behaviour better than their body.
