• Their eyes are the size of their brain. At 16 millimetres in diameter, each eye weighs more than their entire brain — a proportion matched by no other mammal on Earth. They're fixed in their sockets, unable to move side to side, so tarsiers rotate their heads 180 degrees to look around, like an owl wearing a furry coat. Those enormous eyes collect every photon in the rainforest twilight, letting them hunt in near-total darkness.
• A Philippine tarsier weighs less than a smartphone — between 80 and 160 grams — yet can leap 40 times its own body length. That's like a human jumping the length of a football field from a standing start. Their legs are longer than their torso, and their feet have sticky toe pads and a specialised ankle joint that rotates 170 degrees, turning them into acrobats of the vertical forest.
• Their calls sound like bird chirps and cricket trills, but they're producing ultrasonic frequencies humans cannot hear. These high-pitched signals let them communicate through dense vegetation where low-frequency calls would get swallowed by leaf noise — a sonic strategy that wasn't even discovered until the 1960s. • Tarsiers gave birth to primates.
