• A pangolin's tongue is longer than its body. In the Philippine pangolin, that ribbon of muscle can stretch up to 25 centimeters — coiled inside the chest like a fire hose — to probe deep into termite mounds and extract insects one by one. The tongue has no bones, retracts into a sheath below the sternum, and can flick in and out dozens of times per minute. This is the only mammal on Earth built this way.
• Scales made of keratin — the same protein in your fingernails — overlap across the Philippine pangolin's back like roof tiles, forming the most impenetrable armor of any mammal. These scales are so tightly fitted that a predator cannot find a gap to bite through. When threatened, the pangolin curls into a ball so compact that even a leopard cannot pry it open. They evolved this defense 80 million years ago, long before any other mammal developed comparable body armor.
• The Philippine pangolin has no teeth. Instead of chewing, it swallows sand and pebbles that settle in its stomach, grinding food mechanically like a bird's gizzard. A single pangolin can consume over 20,000 ants in a single night, using its sticky saliva — produced in glands the size of walnuts — to coat its tongue and seal prey before swallowing. This feeding strategy is so efficient that pangolins spend only 2–3 hours hunting per night.
• Only around 80 Philippine pangolins are thought to remain in the wild, confined to a single island: Palawan. In the 1970s, an estimated 2,000 still lived there; the population has collapsed due to poaching for scales sold as traditional medicine in Vietnam and China, and habitat loss to logging. No Philippine pangolin has ever been successfully bred in captivity, making wild recovery the only conservation pathway — and an increasingly impossible one.
• The Philippine pangolin is one of only two pangolin species known to climb trees. Using sharp claws and a prehensile tail that grips branches, it scales trunks at night to raid arboreal termite colonies, then descends to forage on the ground. This dual lifestyle — equally at home 10 meters up or at ground level — made it harder to study in the field and easier for poachers to hunt, as it cannot hide in burrows like ground-dwelling cousins.
