• A herring gull chick pecks at a red dot on its parent's bill to trigger regurgitation — and scientists discovered in 1954 that chicks prefer a dot with sharp contrasts and specific angles over the parent's actual face. This experiment became the foundation of ethology, proving that animals respond to exaggerated signals more powerfully than reality itself, a principle that shaped how we understand instinct.
• Herring gulls can drink saltwater. Their supraorbital gland (a specialised organ above each eye) filters out salt and excretes it as concentrated brine, dropping from the bill or eye corner. • Herring gulls learn from each other where to feed and what's safe to eat. Researchers watched gulls in one colony learn to peel back the lids of yoghurt pots in seaside bins, then that behaviour spread to neighbouring colonies 16 km away within months. They have no formal schooling — just observation and imitation — yet they develop local 'cultures' distinct enough that scientists can track how ideas move between groups.
