• A pea crab female spends her entire adult life trapped inside a single clam or mussel — a prisoner of her own body. As a larva she was free, drifting through the water. But around 1 centimetre long, she finds a host and her exoskeleton hardens into a soft, rounded shape that locks her inside for 10 to 15 years. She cannot grow. She cannot leave. She simply feeds on the host's food particles and releases her larvae when reproduction calls. Males remain free-swimming, visiting females only to mate — a bargain struck 100 million years ago that the males won.
• If you've ever eaten a raw oyster and found a tiny bump the size of a pea inside, you met one. Pea crabs hide in mussels and oysters across the North Atlantic, so perfectly camouflaged that diners often don't notice until it moves. A single host can shelter 3 to 5 crabs at once, all feeding from the same food stream — freeloaders who've turned parasitism into an art form.
• The transformation from free larva to immobilised adult is instant and permanent. Once a female pea crab settles into a host, her legs shrivel slightly, her shell softens, and she sheds the ability to hunt or escape. She trades independence for security — a one-way evolutionary door that hasn't changed in 50 million years. No other crab species has made this choice; she is utterly alone in it.
• Male pea crabs are the ocean's tiny gambler, gambling with reproduction. He must find a female trapped deep inside a host mussel, somehow enter that shell without drowning, mate in near-total darkness, and leave. It takes evolved aggression and sexual drive that researchers still don't fully understand. Some scientists believe he releases chemicals that trick the mussel into opening slightly — a chemical password evolved over millennia.
• The pea crab's parasitism may be benign or quietly damaging — nobody is sure. The host mussel continues breathing and filtering water normally; the crab eats only what flows through anyway. Some scientists suspect the crab's presence over years slightly reduces the mussel's reproductive output or growth. Others find no measurable harm at all. After 100 million years of coexistence, parasite and host have reached a stalemate so perfect that we still cannot say whether it is truly parasitism or a quiet deal.
