• A Himalayan pika weighs less than a smartphone — 150 to 200 grams — yet survives at altitudes where oxygen levels would knock out a human in minutes. Their blood carries more haemoglobin per cell than lowland mammals, letting them extract oxygen from thin air that sits 3,600 metres above sea level. This is evolution solving a physics problem: get smaller, get more blood efficiency, or die.
• Listen to a pika's squeak and you're hearing a language spoken in dialects. Each colony has distinct alarm calls for different predators — eagles get one call, leopards another — and pikas from neighbouring valleys don't understand each other's warnings. A pika raised in isolation won't produce the right calls. They learn their language by listening, like human infants learning speech.
• At 4,000 metres up, where winters drop to minus 30°C and the ground freezes solid, a pika does something almost no other mammal does: it stays awake and active all winter long. Instead of hibernating, it builds haystacks in summer — piles of grass and leaves stashed under rocks — and spends winter rationing that food while running and hopping in burrows under the snow. A failed haystack means starvation.
• Pikas breed once yearly in the Himalayas, yet their mountain home is shrinking by 1% per decade as the freezing line creeps upward. A study tracking their populations over 20 years found them abandoning lower-altitude ranges entirely, clustering near the peaks where it's still cold enough. They're running out of mountain to climb.
• The pika's calls are ultrasonic — frequencies above 40 kilohertz that humans cannot hear without equipment. Their squeaks carry across windy alpine slopes where lower-pitched sounds vanish in the noise, and the ultrasonic frequencies travel through the thin mountain air more reliably. They solved the problem of calling in a hurricane by inventing their own private frequency nobody else can eavesdrop on.
