• Royle's pika is the most common pika species in the Himalayas and measures just 17-22 cm in length. Its body is a rufous-grey colour with a chestnut-coloured head and a slightly arched skull, while sparse hair fringes the area in front of its ears. It prefers open rocky mountain edges, slopes and conifer-covered ground such as pine, deodar and rhododendron forests.
• Unlike many other pika species, Royle's pika rarely builds haypiles for food storage. Instead it occupies narrow creeks and abandoned burrow systems, lining them with pine leaves and small hay piles to create a nest. This behaviour reflects its reliance on existing rocky refuges rather than constructing new structures. The species also uses rocky mountain areas to escape predators, showing a preference for natural shelter over elaborate caches.
• Royle's pika typically lives a solitary life and maintains a low population density across its range. In the Nepal Himalayas surveys recorded only 12.5 individuals per hectare, while in the Garhwal Himalayas the density was slightly higher at 16.2 per hectare. These figures illustrate how sparsely the species is distributed despite being the most common pika in the region.
• When suitable habitat becomes fragmented, Royle's pika populations that are isolated by more than one kilometre show a clear loss of genetic variation, which can weaken long-term survival prospects. This reduction is linked to the species' solitary nature and the increasing restriction of its alpine range as climate change pushes it higher.
• Royle's pika readily lives near people, classed as a synanthrope, and is often found on rocky slopes beside human habitations. It forages mainly at dawn and dusk, taking advantage of the open, conifer-covered ground that frequently borders villages and farms. The species does not build its own nests but occupies narrow creeks and abandoned burrows, which are plentiful in these disturbed areas, lining them with pine leaves and small hay piles for shelter.
