• An owl's eyes are so large they can't rotate in their sockets — but their neck spins 270 degrees, nearly three-quarters of a full circle, to scan for prey without moving the rest of its body. This extreme flexibility comes from extra neck vertebrae and a blood vessel system that doesn't kink during the twist. A barn owl hunting in darkness can pinpoint a mouse by sound alone, accurate to within 1 degree of angle.
• When a great horned owl dives at 40 miles per hour to snatch a rabbit from snow, its talons close with a force of 500 pounds per square inch — stronger than a lion's bite. The strike happens in complete silence because serrated feather edges break airflow into turbulence instead of noise, letting the owl hunt unheard. A single talon is longer than a grizzly bear's claw.
• Screech owls don't screech — they whistle and trill. But their name stuck from 1758, and they've lived with it ever since.
