Fascinating facts about the Ornate Sunbird

• The ornate sunbird builds an elongated hanging nest that can reach up to 60 cm in length. The female fashions the structure from grass, bark, moss, lichens, leaf fragments, vegetable fibres and spider webs, creating a sturdy yet flexible cup. A hooded side entrance conceals the opening while still allowing the birds to move in and out. This design comfortably holds the typical clutch of one to three eggs and is reused for several broods each year.
• Ornate sunbird nests are usually suspended between 0.5 m and 1.5 m above the ground, positioning them safely among low vegetation. In exceptional cases the female will hang a nest as high as 10 m, taking advantage of taller trees or shrubs. The hanging placement keeps the nest away from many ground predators while still being accessible for feeding trips.
• DNA analysis shows the ornate sunbird is deeply genetically distinct from its former conspecifics. The mitochondrial sequences separate it clearly from other groups in the olive-backed complex.
• The male of the nominate subspecies shows a subtle purple-black sheen on its forehead, a trait that sets it apart from the garden sunbird. It is olive above with black remiges edged in green and a black tail tipped in white, while the throat, side of neck and breast shine blue-black iridescent. Its underparts are yellow but noticeably paler than those of its former conspecific, giving a clear visual distinction.
• French naturalist René Lesson formally described the ornate sunbird in 1827, assigning it the binomial Cinnyris ornatus that remains its scientific name. The specimens illustrated by Temminck were collected on the island of Java, anchoring the species' early taxonomic record.
