Fascinating facts about the Oribi

• An oribi weighs less than a house cat — about 1.5 kilograms — making it one of Africa's tiniest antelopes. Yet it survives on savanna where lions, leopards, and hyenas hunt, relying on a trick most prey animals can't manage: it stands completely still when threatened, betting that stillness will be invisible where movement screams 'hunt me.' Only when a predator closes to 10 metres does it bolt in zigzagging bounds that can be mistaken for the panic of a bird rather than a mammal.
• The oribi marks its territory obsessively — leaving dung piles, urine, and scent from facial glands at precise locations across a home range of just 10 to 50 hectares. A single pair or small family will maintain these scent stations like a postal route, visiting them daily. This behaviour is so rigid that researchers can predict exactly where an oribi will be on any given morning, turning a 1.5-kilogram antelope into one of Africa's most predictable wild animals.
• Male oribis are among the few antelope species where the female is larger than the male, and where both sexes stay together for life in monogamous pairs — rare in antelope families. They forage side by side, sleep within metres of each other, and defend their tiny territory as a unit. If one dies, the surviving partner may never breed again, suggesting a depth of pair bonding that's been documented in less than 5 percent of mammal species.
• Despite being leaf- and grass-eaters no bigger than a rabbit, oribis almost never drink standing water — a survival strategy in arid savannas where water holes become death traps during dry seasons. Instead, they extract moisture from plants, concentrating their urine to conserve every drop. This independence from waterholes lets them inhabit parts of the African savanna where larger grazers cannot afford to venture.
• The oribi's coat contains a hidden pocket of bare skin on its hindquarters called a scent gland, which it exposes and rubs against grass when alarmed — a silent chemical warning to other oribis that danger is close. This alert spreads through the population faster than a predator can follow, turning isolated antelopes into an interconnected vigilance network across the savanna.
