Fascinating facts about the Opalescent Nudibranch

• For nine decades the opalescent nudibranch was lumped together with its close relative Hermissenda crassicornis, treated as a single species. During that period the two were routinely considered one taxon, a practice that persisted for the last 90 years. The overlap of their ranges in Northern California helped mask their differences, keeping them indistinguishable until recent taxonomic work finally separated them.
• Its known range stretches from Northern California to Punta Eugenia in Mexico, covering a substantial portion of the Pacific coast. The species was first described from San Diego, California, and subsequent reports have confirmed its presence along that entire stretch. In addition to the mainland coast, it has also been observed in Bahia de los Angeles in the Gulf of California, extending its documented habitat into the Gulf.
• The opalescent sea slug reaches roughly 50 mm in length, about two inches. It belongs to the family Facelinidae.
• Researchers have used this nudibranch as a model for classical conditioning, memory consolidation and neural circuit studies. It has also been employed to explore the ultrastructure and anatomy of nudibranch tissues, as well as larval and reproductive ecology, behavioural ecology and pharmacology and toxicology, including investigations of Beta thymosins.
• The opalescent nudibranch feeds on hydroids and other marine organisms such as ascidians and sea anemones, giving it a varied diet in its intertidal, bay and estuary habitats. When encountering other nudibranchs it sometimes attacks them, and it will also consume smaller individuals of its own species, showing opportunistic predation.
