Fascinating facts about the Oleander Aphid

• Males have never been observed in the wild, and only females are found in natural populations. Laboratory work has shown that males can be produced under controlled conditions, but these never appear outside the lab. Consequently, every field colony, even the small ones reported from a Polish glasshouse and gardens in London, consists solely of female aphids. This female-only makeup shapes how the species spreads and reproduces.
• Female oleander aphids give birth to live nymphs, a reproductive method known as viviparity, and they do so without needing a mate through parthenogenesis. This combination lets a single female rapidly establish a new colony on a host plant. The aphid mainly feeds on dogbane family members such as milkweeds, oleander and periwinkle, where the newborn nymphs can immediately begin feeding and developing. The result is swift population growth on suitable hosts.
• Oleander aphid can act as a vector of viruses in the genus Potyvirus and Cucumovirus. Documented viruses include Cucumber mosaic virus, Papaya ringspot virus, Watermelon mosaic virus and several others.
• Winged, or alate, females of the oleander aphid appear more often in areas where the insects must move to temporary hosts each year, a seasonal migration that triggers the development of flight-capable forms. In contrast, many females remain wingless when conditions allow them to stay on a single plant.
