• A treeshrew's heart beats 600 times a minute — five times faster than a human's — yet it lives only 12 years despite burning through its body weight in food every 12 days. This metabolic furnace is so extreme that missing a single meal can kill it. Their ancestors split from primates 60 million years ago, and this brutal efficiency is what kept them alive when other small mammals didn't.
• Treeshrews are among the few mammals that practice 'baby parking' — mothers deposit infants in separate leaf-lined nests and visit only once every 48 hours to feed them. The babies stay put, barely moving, while the mother hunts, protecting them through immobility rather than vigilance. It's a trade-off: mothers can forage longer, but a single missed feeding window means starvation.
• When threatened, a treeshrew doesn't flee — it jumps backward off branches with no parachute, hitting the forest floor 10 metres below at full impact and sprinting away. Their skeletal structure can absorb falls that would shatter a squirrel. Some species have tails so muscular they use them as a third limb to brace landings, turning near-fatal drops into tactical escapes.
• A treeshrew's nose is studded with sensitive whisker-like hairs that read air currents and vibrations invisible to the eye, allowing it to hunt millimetre-long insects in complete darkness. They're among the fastest insectivores alive, snatching prey mid-leap with reflexes faster than a snake's strike. Their brain-to-body ratio rivals primates, though their neural wiring is entirely different — proof that intelligence isn't one thing.
• In Southeast Asian rainforests, treeshrews are among the most important seed dispersers for fig trees, yet they're barely studied. A single treeshrew can visit 50 fig trees in a day, leaving droppings scattered across miles of canopy. This relationship is so old — likely 30+ million years — that we still don't fully understand it. Most of what treeshrews do in the forest remains invisible to science.
