• A northern parula weighs less than a AA battery — 8 to 12 grams — yet it migrates between Central America and Canada twice a year, crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single 18-hour flight. That's like a human walking across North America on no food. They fuel these journeys by doubling their body weight in fat before departure, then burning it all over open water with no place to land.
• Male northern parulas sing two different songs, and they switch between them mid-conversation like a bilingual speaker. One song attracts mates; the other warns rival males to back off. Researchers discovered this isn't learned from listening to other birds — it's innate, wired into their brain at birth. Few songbirds have this built-in vocal flexibility.
• The female northern parula is the architect of one of North America's strangest nests: she hangs her woven pouch from a beard of lichen or Spanish moss, lashing it with spider silk so it sways 5 to 15 metres above the ground. The nest is so perfectly camouflaged that ornithologists often miss it even when they're standing underneath, looking up. The spider silk actually shrinks when it gets wet, tightening the nest during rain.
• A northern parula's eyes are calibrated to see ultraviolet light, which means they detect colours in spiderwebs that are invisible to us — silks gleam like neon signs to them, making it easier to spot prey wrapped in silk. This ultraviolet vision is also why males appear more blue and females more green in the parula's world; the colours are far more contrasted than what we see in photos.
• These birds time their spring arrival to the exact week when caterpillars emerge from eggs in eastern forests — a synchronisation so precise it's off by only days even across a continent. But climate change is warming the spring earlier each year, and some populations now arrive to find caterpillars already gone. It's one of the clearest examples of a bird species running out of step with the forest that feeds it.
