• An Arctic hare can leap 6 metres in a single bound — the length of a car — and zigzag at speeds up to 60 km/h when a wolf gives chase. Unlike most hares that flee in straight lines, Arctic hares execute hard right angles mid-sprint, a tactic that exploits their lightweight frame (4 kg) and forces heavier predators to overshoot. This isn't speed for speed's sake; it's geometry as survival.
• In winter, an Arctic hare's fur turns pure white, but its ear tips stay dark — a trade-off that puzzles biologists. The ears are packed with blood vessels for cooling in summer, and keeping them dark might help absorb precious solar heat in months when temperatures plunge to −40°C. The hare also grows fur on the soles of its feet, the only part of a rabbit's body that typically stays bare, turning its paws into furry snowshoes.
• Arctic hares are one of the few herbivores that don't migrate or hibernate through the polar winter. Instead they survive on lichen, dried grasses, and the bark of dwarf willow — plants so sparse that a single hare may need to forage across 50 square kilometres. They've evolved a stomach lining that can extract nutrition from plants most mammals can't digest, essentially living on the Arctic's poorest table.
• In spring, Arctic hares gather in groups of hundreds, sometimes thousands, hopping and boxing each other in what researchers call 'tonic immobility' events — they stand upright on hind legs and appear to stare. The trigger is still mysterious. It may be a mating ritual, a predator-avoidance strategy, or a way to synchronise reproduction across the population. Scientists have watched it happen for decades without full explanation.
• An Arctic hare's eyes are positioned far back on its head, giving it nearly 360-degree vision — it can see behind itself without turning. Combined with ears that swivel independently, this means a hare can track a wolf's approach from almost any angle while its nose stays buried in snow, searching for food.
