Fascinating facts about the Northern Brown Brocket
- The Amazonian brown brocket is found across a broad swathe of northern South America, ranging from Colombia and Venezuela through the Guianas, eastern Ecuador and Peru, into Brazil and possibly northern Bolivia. Its presence in Panama is limited to a single island, Isla San José in the Pearl Islands, where the endemic subspecies M. permira occurs.
- The brown brocket occupies habitats from sea level up to 1,500 metres, favouring the non-flooded Amazonian tropical rainforest that dominates its range. It also ventures into tropical deciduous forest and xeric shrublands, although sightings in those drier environments may sometimes be misidentified individuals of M.
- Throughout most of its range the brown brocket shares its forest home with the larger M. americana, a sympatric deer that typically occurs at much higher population densities. In addition to this overlap, the two species are occasionally found alongside M. gouazoubira in a few localities, creating a complex community of three closely related brockets.
- Until the turn of the millennium the Amazonian brown brocket was treated as a subspecies of M. gouazoubira. Only in 2000 was it formally split and given full species status, reflecting subtle but consistent differences that had been overlooked.
- The main dangers facing the Amazonian brown brocket stem from the loss of its forest home and from illnesses carried by domestic cattle. Ongoing clearing of non-flooded rainforest removes the dense cover the deer relies on for feeding and shelter. In addition, pathogens transmitted from cattle can spread through the deer population, further reducing numbers. Hunting, by contrast, is not considered a significant threat to this species.
