- An adult North American river otter can weigh between 5 and 14 kilograms (11-31 lb), stretch 66 to 107 cm long, and sport a tail 30 to 50 cm in length. This compact power-package lets it chase fish while still fitting into burrows along riverbanks, linking its body design directly to its dual life in water and on shore.
- Adult river otters can gulp 1.0-1.5 kg (2.2-3.3 lb) of fish each day, and in an Alberta study fish remnants appeared in 91.9% of 1,191 scat samples, showing fish dominate their diet. Yet in a central California marsh, crayfish made up nearly 100% of their meals at peak times, highlighting how otters flexibly switch prey to match seasonal abundance.
- Otters give birth to litters that can reach five kits but usually number one to three, each weighing about five ounces. Their reproduction is delayed: gestation lasts two months, yet the fertilized egg may not implant for up to a year, spreading births from November to May with a peak in March-April.
