• Measuring just 20-25 cm long and weighing up to 650 g, the North African hedgehog, yet its longer legs let it outrun its African cousins. Its size matches the 200-250 mm length range recorded for the species, and the extra leg length translates into a noticeably faster runner than the European hedgehog. This speed helps it escape predators in the Mediterranean scrub where it lives, giving it a better chance to survive in a landscape full of owls.
• A North African hedgehog can have two litters each breeding season, from October to March, with each litter holding three to ten newborns that weigh only 12-20 g. Pregnancy lasts just 30-40 days, and the tiny hoglets are born hairless, gaining their first hard quills after about four weeks. By eight-to-ten weeks old they are sexually mature, ready to start the cycle again.
• The brain of the North African hedgehog can host the zoonotic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the rat lungworm that causes angiostrongyliasis in humans. In wild populations this parasite shows a seasonal pattern, with most infections recorded in autumn.
• Native from Morocco across Libya, the hedgehog also inhabits southern Spain, the Canary Islands and the Balearics, but cannot survive the Sahara's dry deserts. It prefers Mediterranean conifer and mixed forests and is found up to 900 m elevation in Morocco, though most sightings are below 400 m. Populations once established in France have vanished, making the species extirpated there.
