• In 1967, the dibbler vanished from science for 83 years — until a single animal was trapped in a jar of peanut paste in Western Australia. This marsupial the size of a house mouse had been hiding in the mallee scrub the whole time, and that one rediscovery in 1948 saved the species from being declared extinct. Today fewer than 3,000 remain in the wild.
• A dibbler's hunting strategy looks like a high-speed raid: it sprints through heath at night, slashing open insects with its canine teeth and stripping flesh from small lizards in seconds. Its body burns fuel so fast that it must eat almost constantly during its active hours — a furious, 30-gram appetite that depends entirely on the insect gluts that follow bushfires.
• Female dibblers are the hunters and the explorers — they roam further, hunt larger prey, and have more offspring. Males barely hunt and spend their entire spring breeding season chasing females across the heath, never establishing a territory. This is nearly the opposite of most mammals, and it shapes everything about how the species survives.
• Dibblers need fire like humans need air. After a heath fire, insects explode in abundance, and dibblers breed in huge numbers — females can raise three litters in a single season. But without fire, the plants become woody, insects disappear, and the population crashes. In the last 15 years, conservation teams have set controlled burns in southwestern Australia specifically to feed them.
• The dibbler's closest living relative went extinct on the Australian mainland and survives only on Monk Island, 100 kilometres offshore. Both species split from a common ancestor around 3 million years ago, but the dibbler alone managed to adapt to the heathland. Its survival has almost nothing to do with strength and everything to do with living inside a fire cycle most creatures cannot endure.
