Fascinating facts about the Dibbler

• The dibbler fits in the palm of your hand, measuring just 10-16 cm (3.9-6.3 in) long with a 7.5-12 cm (3.0-4.7 in) tail and weighing only 40-125 g (1.4-4.4 oz). On the mainland, males average 145 mm in length and 60-100 g, while females are slightly smaller at 140 mm and 40-75 g. This tiny size lets it slip through dense leaf litter and thin branches, letting it hunt insects and hide from predators.
• Dibblers breed once a year in the short window of March, April, and a single female can raise up to eight joeys. After a relatively long gestation of 44-53 days, the young develop in a shallow pouch before staying with their mother for 3-4 months. They leave the pouch in September or October and only become sexually mature at 10-11 months, meaning each generation takes almost a full year to replace itself, a slow pace for such a small marsupial.
• On Boullanger Island male dibblers die right after mating, a phenomenon called semelparity. Researchers link the die-off to extreme energy use, spikes in free corticosteroids, and illnesses like ulcers, anemia and parasites. Mainland males live through several breeding seasons, suggesting the island's harsh conditions trigger the fatal crash. One clue is the lack of seabird colonies that enrich soil; Whitlock Island, with many seabirds, has 18 times more nutrients and far more insects, giving its dibblers a better post-breeding survival rate.
• A true insect-hunter, the dibbler eats any bug it can catch, grasshoppers, cockroaches, beetles, termites and ants are all on the menu. Yet about one-fifth of its diet comes from plant matter, especially the berries of Rhagodia baccata, and it will also sip nectar from flowers.
• Thought extinct by 1884, the dibbler was rediscovered at Cheyne Beach in 1967 and is now listed as endangered. Conservation teams at Perth Zoo and the Department of Environment and Conservation breed the animal and release it onto islands such as Escape Island. Early translocations have already produced three generations of dibblers.
