• Lumbricus terrestris is the largest naturally occurring earthworm across much of Europe, typically reaching 20 to 25 cm when fully extended. Individuals commonly measure between 110 and 200 mm in length, with some reaching the upper end of that range. Its pinkish-to-reddish brown colour and cylindrical body make it conspicuous in garden soils. Because of its size it is easily seen on the surface, unlike most other earthworms.
• On moist, flat ground Lumbricus terrestris can crawl at about 20 m per hour and may travel up to 19 m in a single nocturnal surface foray. Such movements are most often observed after heavy rainfall, when large numbers of worms appear on the ground. The activity is thought to help the worm escape water-logged burrows, although it can also survive in oxygenated water for weeks.
• Lumbricus terrestris can survive in oxygenated water for long periods, stretching to weeks, which means flooding does not force it to the surface. Experiments have shown the worm can remain active in water for several weeks without drowning. This tolerance allows it to endure temporary water-logged conditions in its deep vertical burrows.
• Males of Lumbricus terrestris can store sperm for up to eight months, allowing them to fertilise multiple cocoons long after a single copulation. After mating, a worm may continue to produce cocoons for as long as twelve months, extending its reproductive output well beyond the immediate encounter. This prolonged sperm storage and cocoon production mean that a single mating event can sustain the population across many seasons.
• In north-west Europe, Lumbricus terrestris populations are now locally endangered because two predatory flatworms, the New Zealand flatworm and the Australian flatworm, have been introduced. These flatworms are highly efficient earthworm eaters and can persist for long periods without food, driving worm numbers to unsustainably low levels. The loss of these large anecic worms reduces soil aeration and organic mixing, harming soil structure and quality.
