• The male Napoleon spider is half the size of his mate, yet he performs an elaborate courtship dance that lasts up to 8 hours — waving his front legs in precise patterns while vibrating his abdomen. If she doesn't recognize his moves as 'correct', she eats him. Evolution has shaped his entire brain around getting those signals exactly right.
• With a body the size of a pea, the Napoleon spider hunts flies twice its own weight by creeping within millimetres of its web while its prey feeds. At the final moment it pounces sideways — a trajectory no larger predator could pull off — and wraps the fly before it can lift off. The spider's eyes see in ultraviolet, revealing patterns on the fly's wings invisible to human sight.
• Female Napoleon spiders lay 40 to 50 eggs inside a silken egg sac and guard it for weeks, refusing to hunt or eat. • In autumn, male Napoleon spiders undergo a dramatic colour shift from dull brown to brilliant red with white markings — a seasonal transformation triggered by daylight length, not temperature. This flash of colour lasts only 3 to 4 weeks, just long enough for mating season. Once it ends, they revert to brown or die, making their courtship window razor-thin.
