• A mountain zebra's stripes are like a fingerprint — no two patterns are identical, and researchers use photographs of individual zebras to track populations across decades. Each animal's stripe geometry is so precise that scientists can distinguish a mother from her foal at birth. This personal bar code has revealed something unexpected: mountain zebras recognise each other by stripe pattern alone, calling out to family members they haven't seen in months and finding them instantly in a herd of hundreds.
• Mountain zebras can climb near-vertical cliff faces that would exhaust a mountain goat, using their powerful shoulders and splayed hooves to grip rock faces at angles up to 60 degrees. They've evolved shorter, stockier builds than their plains cousins — a mountain zebra weighs 260–370 kg, about 100 kg less than a Burchell's zebra — which shifts their centre of gravity forward and gives them the agility of a 400 kg rock climber. This is why they survive where predators cannot follow: they escape to terrain that is technically impassable.
• In the 1980s, fewer than 60 mountain zebras existed in the wild — the lowest count for any African large mammal outside a zoo. A single reserve in South Africa, Mountain Zebra National Park, held almost all of them. Today, thanks to reintroduction, around 4,000 live across southern Africa. This is one of conservation's quietest wins: a species pulled back from extinction's edge, but so few people know its name that when they see one, they assume it's just a regular zebra in odd terrain.
• Unlike most grazers, mountain zebras don't defend territory — instead, they form stable family units of a stallion, mares, and foals that stay together for life, moving between dry-season and wet-season grazing grounds on routes their mothers taught them. A mare leads the group, choosing where to drink and which cliff paths to take. This matriarchal knowledge system means an old female's brain contains decades of memory about where water hides during droughts — information that can mean the difference between a herd surviving or starving.
• Mountain zebras produce a barking call that carries across valleys for miles, a sound that is nothing like a horse's whinny and sounds more like a dog trapped in a canyon. Each individual has a distinct voice pitch and rhythm — a vocal signature — and they use it to coordinate movement across cliffs where sight lines are broken. Researchers studying reintroduced populations found that zebras separated by geography for 50 years still recognised their relatives by voice alone when populations were reunited, suggesting these calls encode individual identity at a level similar to human speech.
