• The mona monkey is native to western Africa, ranging from Ghana to Cameroon, where it inhabits lowland forests. In the 18th century it was carried across the Atlantic on slave ships and released on Grenada, establishing a wild population far from its original range. This accidental introduction means the West African primate now lives on a Caribbean island, illustrating how human movement can create distant, self-sustaining colonies.
• Male mona monkeys have a head-and-body length of 410 to 630 mm and a tail length of 520 to 730 mm. Females have a head-and-body length of 340 to 457 mm.
• At the base of its black tail the mona monkey displays a pair of distinct white hair patches that closely resemble the ischial callosities seen in baboons and other Old World monkeys. These patches sit on either side of the tail's origin and are a notable field mark for identification.
• The mona monkey thrives in West African lowland forests but will also settle in heavily degraded woodland, gallery forest that lines savannahs, and the mangrove swamps of the Niger River delta. This ability to use a range of forest types lets it remain the most frequently seen monkey along riverbanks, where water corridors concentrate fruiting trees.
• Mona monkeys are a noisy troop, constantly producing a harsh grating call that fills the canopy. When danger approaches, the dominant male adds a distinctive "ooer" alarm that alerts group members and nearby monkeys. While moving through the trees the group mainly picks fruit, but it also supplements its diet with flowers, seeds and a variety of insects and other invertebrates.
