- The Hualapai Mexican vole was listed as a protected taxon under the United States Endangered Species Act, a status that persisted until its removal in 2017. After the delisting, the vole no longer receives federal endangered-species safeguards, although other populations remain unprotected.
- The Mexican vole occupies a disjunct distribution, with populations scattered across the southwestern United States and Mexico rather than forming a continuous range. Its isolated pockets are found in grasslands and other habitat types, showing a broad adaptability to varied climate conditions.
