• A meerkat's eyes sit on top of its head like a periscope, letting it scan for eagles while its body stays hidden underground. They can spot a martial eagle—a predator that weighs 15 times more than they do—from 1 kilometre away. This positioning is so effective that meerkats spend 25% of their waking hours as sentries, rotating the job every few minutes so the group can forage without panic.
• Baby meerkats are born blind and deaf, and the mother stops producing milk after just 10 weeks—earlier than almost any other mammal. The entire mob then switches to a bizarre foster system: younger siblings, aunts, and even the father regurgitate pre-chewed scorpions into the pups' mouths. A single babysitter can feed 4 pups simultaneously by standing still while they mob her face.
• Meerkats are immune to certain scorpion venoms that would kill other animals 100 times their size.
