Fascinating facts about the Mediterranean Gull

• A century ago, Mediterranean gulls had nearly vanished from Europe — fewer than 100 pairs nested anywhere on the continent. Today over 100,000 breeding pairs thrive from the Atlantic to the Caspian Sea. Their recovery is one of conservation's quietest wins, a rebound so complete that what was once a rarity is now common in harbours from Barcelona to Istanbul.
• Unlike their larger cousins, Mediterranean gulls are pickpockets of the insect world. While other gulls hunt fish, these birds hover like terns and snatch flying insects mid-air, or wade in shallows to probe for crustaceans hidden in mud. Their lightweight build — barely 300 grams — lets them manoeuvre like swallows, making them aerial hunters most gulls never attempt.
• A Mediterranean gull's head turns from white to jet black each breeding season, a monthly transformation driven by hormones. The same bird that looks pale and unremarkable in winter grows a dark cap in spring, signalling readiness to breed. This isn't a moult; the dark feathers were already there, hidden beneath the white ones — a biological disguise that flips on and off with the calendar.
• Mediterranean gulls are architects of their own neighbourhoods. They breed in dense, organised colonies where hundreds of pairs nest metres apart, and they actively chase away predators and competing species together. A single colony can raise 20,000 chicks in a season, but only if the flock stays unified — their safety lies entirely in numbers and coordination.
• The species' scientific name changed twice in recent decades as genetic studies rewrote gull family trees. Once classified with Black-headed Gulls, DNA evidence moved them into the genus Ichthyaetus in 2005, revealing they were more closely related to larger gulls nobody suspected. Their own evolution was a mystery to science until molecular tools rewired what we thought we knew about gull origins.
