• When a spittlebug launches, the hind-leg tarsal spines and spine hairs embed into the plant surface, giving the jump a solid purchase. Scanning-electron images confirm this grip, and X-ray spectroscopy shows the dark tips of those spines, just the last 6/100ths of a millimetre, are reinforced with zinc. That metallic reinforcement lets the insect spring away faster than many predators can react.
• After about 20 days, spittlebug eggs hatch into nymphs that pass through five instar stages during a larval period of roughly 50 days. The nymphs live inside protective foam bubbles, which keep them moist and shielded; the foam dries in about ten days before the adults emerge.
