• A reddish-yellow submarginal crescent spot reaches the wing's vertex, extending far into the disc. This distinctive lunate mark sits between the two median veins on both the forewings and the hindwings, making it stand out from the other yellow lunate spots. Additionally, the submarginal lunule between the first and second median veins projects further basal than its neighbours, giving the species a unique wing pattern.
• The caterpillars are grey-bodied with a stark black head and soft red-brown branched thorns covering their skin. Their dorsal surface bears dark lines and numerous tiny white dots, giving them a speckled appearance. These larvae feed on plants of the genera Plantago and Centaurea, including the common knapweed species, linking their diet to the butterfly's common name.
• Across Europe the knapweed fritillary avoids the north, missing countries like England, Ireland, Northern France, Germany, Poland, Holland, Belgium and Scandinavia. Its range therefore stops before these northern regions, leaving a large gap in its otherwise broad distribution. Beyond Europe it also occurs in North Africa (Morocco and Algeria), Turkey, Siberia and further east into Mongolia and northern China, inhabiting flowery meadows, plains and even rocky hills.
• The knapweed fritillary originally included the cryptic taxon Melitaea telona, but recent research has reinstated telona as a separate species, tightening the definition of Melitaea phoebe. This taxonomic revision means that records of the butterfly now refer only to Melitaea phoebe.
• In 1779 the butterfly received its first scientific name, Papilio phoebe, when entomologists Johann Nepomuk Cosmas, Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller published its description. The authors placed it within the broader group of butterflies, which today is recognised as the family Nymphalidae. This early classification laid the groundwork for later taxonomic work that refined its genus to Melitaea and clarified its common name, knapweed fritillary.
