• A malleefowl never sits on its eggs — instead, it builds a mound the size of a small car, up to 4 meters across and 1.5 meters tall, then relies on the heat of decomposing vegetation inside to incubate them. The male spends months testing the mound's temperature with his beak, adjusting the sand covering to keep eggs at exactly 33°C, like a living thermometer managing a compost oven.
• Male malleefowl stay with the same mound for up to 16 years, sometimes tending a single burial site across multiple generations of birds. They inherit knowledge of which mounds work best — passed down through territory ownership rather than genetic memory — making these birds part archaeologist, part caretaker of their own ancestry.
