• Low's squirrel has a tail that weighs almost as much as its entire body — a living counterbalance rod that lets it perform mid-air 180-degree turns on vertical tree trunks. That oversized tail acts like a parachute too: a Low's squirrel can leap 10 metres between canopy branches and land safely, a feat most rodents its size would never survive. The tail's weight-to-body ratio is unique among Southeast Asian squirrels, a design evolved specifically for life in the dense three-dimensional maze of rainforest ceilings.
• When fruit seasons collapse in their Bornean and Malaysian rainforest homes, Low's squirrels switch to fungi — eating underground truffle-like species that most animals cannot access. In doing this, they become unwitting gardeners: spores pass through their digestive system and are deposited across the forest floor, helping regenerate the fungal networks that feed tree roots. A single squirrel can disperse millions of fungal spores in a season, invisibly holding together ecosystems that look green from above but would collapse without these buried partnerships.
• Low's squirrels live in a world of constant colour-coding — they're hunting for ripe fruit in a canopy where unripe seeds are toxic. Their eyes are tuned to see ultraviolet and red wavelengths that human eyes cannot detect, allowing them to spot which fruits have crossed the ripeness threshold before their eyes even look ripe to us. This hidden colour language between squirrel and rainforest drives which seeds get eaten first, and therefore which plants dominate the next generation of forest.
• A Low's squirrel's brain is smaller than a walnut, yet it can remember the precise location of hundreds of seed caches scattered across multiple square kilometres of rainforest canopy — trees it may not revisit for months. If it recovered every single cache it buried, it would survive the lean season easily; instead, it deliberately 'forgets' about 15 per cent of them. These abandoned caches become seedlings: the squirrel's failed memory is responsible for replanting entire sections of the rainforest it inhabits.
• Low's squirrels are almost never seen by humans — a 2010 camera-trap study across Borneo recorded them in fewer than 3 per cent of footage compared to more visible squirrel species, despite the same habitat. They forage at night, move through the highest canopy layer where light barely penetrates, and are silent hunters. Their rarity in our records says nothing about their actual abundance or ecological importance; they are simply a species we have barely looked for in the right way.
