• A wild long-tailed chinchilla measures up to 260 mm from nose to rump and its tail adds another 130 mm, yet its body mass stays under half a kilogram, males 369-493 g (mean 412 g) and females 379-450 g (mean 422 g). When domesticated, individuals can, with females reaching 800 g and males 600 g.
• Female chinchillas carry their young for 110-124 days, then give birth to 1-6 pups, usually twice a year. Newborns weigh about 35 g (1.2 oz), are fully furred. They nurse for roughly 45 days before weaning, reach sexual maturity at eight months, and typically live ten years in the wild, though with human care some surpass two decades.
• Fewer than 10,000 long-tailed chinchillas survive in the wild today, earning them an Endangered rating and the second-highest conservation priority among Chilean mammals. Decades of hunting for their ultra-soft pelts, at one point 500,000 skins were shipped annually, drove numbers to near-extinction, and today illegal poaching, habitat loss and shrub harvesting keep populations fragile.
