• A chinchilla's fur is so dense that parasites can't reach its skin — roughly 60 hairs sprout from each follicle, compared to one per follicle in humans. • Living at altitudes where humans struggle to breathe, chinchillas have blood that carries oxygen with ruthless efficiency — their hemoglobin binds oxygen so tightly that they thrive where most mammals would suffocate. This mountain-adapted blood is why they overheat in lowland zoos and why captive breeding programs are concentrated in high-altitude regions like Peru and Chile.
