Little blue herons span just over half a meter to three-quarters of a meter in length, about the size of a school ruler, yet their wings stretch a full meter, roughly the width of a doorway. Weighing only 397 grams (about 14 oz), they're lighter than a standard can of soda.
If global warming stays on its current trajectory, the little blue heron's summer range is projected to swell by 87 % by 2080, while losing only about 1 % of its present area. This expansion could push the species into the Great Lakes region and southern Canada, turning previously unsuitable northern wetlands into new breeding grounds.
When the breeding season arrives, the little blue heron's head flips from its usual purple-maroon to a deep, dark red, and its modest crest sprouts extra feathers that can trail 20-30 cm (7.9-11.8 in) beyond the tail, longer than a standard ruler.
Among seven migratory wading birds studied, the little blue heron travels the farthest, averaging a dispersal distance of 1,148 km (713 mi) each season.
In Brazil's southeastern mangroves, 80 % of a little blue heron's diet during breeding consists of crabs, and in Puerto Rico's southwestern mangroves the birds eat nothing but fiddler crabs.
