• A bird smaller than a robin travels 14,000 kilometres twice a year on legs thinner than a pencil. The lesser yellowlegs migrates from Arctic breeding grounds to South American wetlands, a journey that takes weeks of non-stop flying over open ocean. They weigh less than 70 grams — about three coins — yet their legs are disproportionately long and bright yellow, built for wading through flooded grasslands where deeper-legged birds would drown.
