Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia) lives in temperate forests across Europe and Asia. It feeds on willow tree sap.
Fascinating facts about the Lesser Purple Emperor
- A caterpillar of Apatura ilia grows to a length of 4-5 cm, cloaked in dirty green with striking red-edged yellow stripes and blue-green legs. Its diet leans heavily on poplars and willows, especially Populus tremula, Populus nigra, and a suite of Salix species such as Salix caprea.
- From May through September, the lesser purple emperor may produce one or two generations, spending most of its daylight hovering near the tops of trees to sip honeydew. It only descends to the ground for water, honeydew-rich shrubs, or even animal excrement. Observers note that these butterflies love to circle the crowns of tall willows, the very plants their larvae depend on.
- The species blankets most of Europe and stretches across the Palearctic to Japan, yet it skips the Mediterranean islands, southern Spain, Portugal, southern Italy, Greece, the Nordic nations, Poland, northern Germany and the British Isles. Intriguingly, among 35 European butterflies studied, Apatura ilia alone has nudged its northern frontier southward while its southern edge stayed put.
- The lesser purple emperor's wings are a study in gender contrast: females span 55-60 mm while males stretch to 60-70 mm. On the upperside, both sexes wear dark brown, but only males flash metallic blue-violet hues.
- Beyond biology, the lesser purple emperor carries a mythic name: Ilia, mother of Rome's founders Romulus and Remus. Its cultural imprint even reached the Korean peninsula, where a March 1987 DPR Korea postage stamp showcased the butterfly.
