• A male lesser purple emperor's wings shift from deep purple to jet black depending on the angle you view them — a trick called structural colour that has nothing to do with pigment. The effect is so convincing that females evolved to see males as darker and more dominant than they actually are.
• For weeks as a caterpillar, the lesser purple emperor feeds almost exclusively on willow sap — a liquid with almost no protein. To survive on this liquid junk food, its gut bacteria ferment the sap and synthesize amino acids the insect can't make itself. Lose those bacteria during development and the caterpillar starves despite eating constantly.
• Adult males spend entire afternoons perched on mud patches or damp sand, absorbing minerals through their feet that females cannot access by feeding on nectar alone.
