From the Columbia River in Washington down to Peru, the lesser goldfinch occupies a swath of land, thriving in deserts, mountains, farms and even suburban backyards. Its range stretches from about 30 m to 2,100 m elevation (98 ft to 6,889 ft), showing how it can survive both scorching lowlands and cool high-altitude valleys. This breadth of habitat tolerance explains why the species has surged into the Pacific Northwest as a year-round resident.
During the breeding season, females lay three to six bluish-white eggs in a cup nest tucked 1.2-2.4 m (4-8 ft) above ground, then sit almost nonstop for 12-13 days while the clutch incubates. After hatching, nestlings stay hidden for another 12-14 days before fledging, meaning parents must provide constant food for roughly a month. Such intensive parental care, including hourly regurgitation by the male, occurs in environments with many predators.
A recorded in 2015 proved the species can live at least seven years in the wild, far beyond the typical 1-5 year lifespan most individuals achieve. The previous record from 1960 was just over five years, so this new data point pushes the known longevity ceiling upward.
Lesser goldfinches are ultra-social, often forming flocks of four to six birds that feed together, and during migration they can swell to groups of 20-30 individuals. These gatherings not only improve foraging efficiency but also let the birds dominate mixed-species feeding sites, aggressively chasing away competitors.
At just 9 to 12 cm long and weighing only 8 to 11.5 g, the lesser goldfinch is the tiniest true finch on the continent, rivaled only by a few subtropical Spinus species. Its wing chord measures 5.5-7 cm and its bill is a mere 0.9-1.1 cm.
