• The leopard tortoise is the only extant member of the genus Stigmochelys. No other living tortoise shares this genus, making it a singular evolutionary line.
• The largest recorded leopard tortoise reached 70 cm (28 in) and weighed 40 kg (88 lb). Most adults are about half that size, showing the species can vary dramatically in growth.
• In both very hot and very cold weather, it may dwell in abandoned fox, jackal, or aardvark burrows. These borrowed shelters let the tortoise avoid extreme temperatures without digging its own.
• During the breeding months males become highly competitive, seeking out females and confronting rival males. They use their sturdy shells as battering rams, repeatedly butting opponents in aggressive bouts. After locating a potential mate they may follow her for long distances, often forcing her back with another ram. Throughout these encounters the dominant male emits low grunting sounds as part of the courtship ritual.
• Female leopard tortoises lay their eggs between May and October, digging shallow nests in which they deposit between five and thirty eggs per clutch. Depending on the ambient temperature, the eggs require a prolonged incubation of eight to fifteen months before hatching. A single female can produce up to five to seven such clutches in one breeding season, spreading the emergence of hatchlings over many months.
