Fascinating facts about the Largemouth Bass

• A largemouth bass's jaw can unhinge and expand to nearly twice the width of its body — a hydraulic system so effective it creates a vacuum that sucks prey in at 1 metre per second. The whole strike lasts 100 milliseconds, faster than you can blink. This is why a 5-kilogram bass can swallow a duckling or a fish nearly as long as itself.
• Largemouth bass can see in colour and have better low-light vision than humans, but they hunt almost entirely by feeling vibrations through a line of sensors called the lateral line system that runs the length of their body. A single ripple from a struggling minnow 10 metres away registers like a dinner bell. They're essentially hunting blind in murky water, guided by physics alone.
• Female largemouth bass live 15–20 years and grow steadily throughout their lives — a 9-kilogram specimen is likely 15+ years old and will have spawned dozens of times. Males die younger, typically by age 12, and never grow as large. In warm climates where the growing season lasts year-round, they can reach trophy size in half the time it takes their northern cousins.
• In spring, a male largemouth bass fans a circular nest in lake or river sediment, using his tail like a broom to create a spawning crater 30–60 centimetres across. He then guards the eggs and hatchlings fiercely for weeks, attacking anything that enters — including lures and your hand. This parental investment is rare in fish and makes him vulnerable to fishing during spawning season.
• Largemouth bass were introduced beyond North America starting in the 1870s and are now found on six continents, from Europe to Australia to South Africa. In many invaded ecosystems they've become apex predators, decimating native fish and amphibian populations because local prey species never evolved defences against their vacuum-strike hunting method. They're one of the most successful invasive vertebrates on Earth.
