• When a bush duiker is cornered, it doesn't run in a straight line—it zigzags at sharp angles, sometimes doubling back on its own tracks. This erratic, almost drunken-looking escape route is a survival tactic honed over millions of years; predators like martial eagles and leopards expect prey to flee in logical arcs, and the duiker's randomness breaks that expectation. A 12-centimetre vertical leap from a standstill also lets it vault over fallen logs that would trip a chasing carnivore.
• At just 3.5 kilograms—lighter than a house cat—the bush duiker is Africa's smallest antelope, yet it occupies more territory than any other duiker species. • Male bush duikers are born with tiny horns just 2 centimetres long and spend their first weeks rubbing them against trees and grass to keep them smooth and sharp. These horns never grow past 5 centimetres, yet they use them not to fight other males but to mark territory: they gouge lines into bark and branches, leaving a scent gland secretion that advertises their presence. A single male may defend a territory of just 0.5 square kilometres for life.
