• A lammergeier can digest bone — literally. While other vultures strip meat and move on, this bird swallows chunks of bone up to 10 centimetres long, dropping larger ones from heights of 50 to 150 metres onto rocky outcrops to shatter them first. Its stomach acid is so corrosive it dissolves what would poison any other animal, extracting calcium, phosphorus, and marrow in a process no other large bird on Earth has mastered.
• Lammergeiers mate for life and return to the same cliff nest year after year — some pairs have occupied identical crags for over 30 years. They breed only once every two years, raising a single chick that takes four months to fledge, making them among the slowest-reproducing vultures alive. This loyalty saves energy but leaves populations fragile: a single poisoning or habitat loss can erase a bloodline that took decades to establish.
• The name 'lammergeier' comes from German folklore claiming the bird hunted lambs — a myth that persisted for centuries and cost them dearly. In reality, they are almost exclusively bone-eaters; livestock predation is vanishingly rare. Yet farmers across Europe, Asia, and Africa shot them on suspicion, driving them extinct across much of their former range by the 1970s. The legend killed the bird more effectively than any prey could.
• With a 2.7-metre wingspan and a soaring silhouette unlike any other vulture, lammergeiers ride thermal currents for hours without flapping, covering 150 kilometres or more in a single day to find carcasses. Their eyesight detects a dead animal from 6 kilometres away — roughly the distance from which you could see a house-sized object. This mastery of high-altitude flight makes them the most efficient bone-hunters in mountains from the Himalayas to the Alps.
• Lammergeiers are not purely scavengers — they are practitioners of tool-use. By dropping bones from precise heights onto known stone anvils, they solve a physics problem: bone shatters only at certain angles and velocities. Young birds learn this behaviour by watching parents, suggesting cultural transmission of knowledge across generations, a hallmark of intelligence rarely documented in raptors.
