• A king penguin chick spends 14–16 months in a nursery huddle before fledging — longer than a human pregnancy. During Antarctic winter, thousands of chicks pack together so densely that body heat alone keeps them alive at -40°C, without eating a single meal for weeks. By the time parents return with food, some chicks have shrunk to half their peak weight, surviving on stored fat and the brutal physics of collective warmth.
