• The kiang is the largest wild ass, standing about 140 cm tall at the withers, a height that exceeds all other members of the Asinus subgenus. Individuals range from 132 to 142 cm high and measure 182 to 214 cm in body length, giving them a robust build compared with their relatives. Males weigh between 350 and 400 kg while females are lighter at 250 to 300 kg, yet the species shows only slight sexual dimorphism overall.
• Kiangs inhabit the high Tibetan Plateau, occupying elevations from 2,700 m up to 5,300 m where the air is thin and the climate harsh. Within this altitude band they favour relatively flat plateaus, wide valleys and low hills rather than steep mountain slopes. The terrain they select is dominated by short vegetation such as grasses and sedges, which provides the primary forage for the herd.
• The kiang's chromosome-level genome assembly is about 2.48 gigabases in size, with 96.85 % of the sequence anchored to 27 pseudo-chromosomes, giving researchers a near-complete map of its DNA. The assembly scores a BUSCO completeness of 96.3 %, indicating that most expected genes are present and correctly assembled. In total it contains 20,654 predicted protein-coding genes, providing a rich resource for studying the species' adaptations to high-elevation life.
• In captivity kiangs are able to crossbreed with several other equids, including onagers, horses, donkeys and even Burchell's zebras, producing hybrid offspring. These hybrids are sterile, just as mules are, which prevents any new hybrid line from persisting. Although they can produce such crosses, kiangs have never been domesticated, remaining wild animals even when managed by people.
• Older male kiangs typically live alone, defending a personal territory that can range from 0.5 to 5 km². Within this area they dominate any local groups of females and actively chase away rival males, often using a threat display that includes flattening the ears and braying before pursuing intruders. While temporary herds of females and foals may gather, these aggregations are not permanent, and the solitary stallion remains the sole defender of his range.
