Fascinating facts about the Kiang

• At 14,000 feet above sea level, the kiang's blood carries oxygen 40% more efficiently than a lowland horse's. Their hemoglobin evolved to grip oxygen molecules so tightly that even in air so thin it would leave a human gasping, they gallop across the Tibetan plateau at 65 km/h without breaking stride. This is why they've ruled the high-altitude grasslands for millennia while other equids never made it past the foothills.
• A kiang's ears swivel independently and can detect predators from 8 kilometres away across open terrain where there's nowhere to hide. Their eyes sit on the sides of their head, giving them a nearly 360-degree view — a geometry that lets them spot a snow leopard stalking upwind before the cat has closed half the distance. They're built like prey animals with the alertness of a creature that knows the plateau offers no shelter.
• Kiangs are the only equids that live year-round above 4,000 metres, surviving on vegetation so sparse that a single horse would starve. Their digestive system ferments plants with brutal efficiency, extracting calories from grass so coarse it would cut a domestic horse's mouth. A kiang eats continuously for 16 hours a day just to fuel a body that never stops moving across the windswept plateau.
• During rutting season, stallions gather harems of up to 15 mares and defend territories the size of 20 football fields by charging at rivals with the ferocity of animals that can afford no wounds at altitude where infections turn deadly. These battles leave dust plumes visible for kilometres across the flatlands, and the victors often bear parallel scars down their necks and shoulders — visible proof of Tibetan survival.
• Poaching in the 1990s collapsed the kiang population from over 1 million to 60,000 in two decades, hunted for meat and hides as roads pierced the plateau. Now protected across Tibet, China, and Nepal, the population has rebounded to around 100,000 — a fragile recovery that shows what happens when a species with no natural predators finally faces a predator it cannot outrun or outthink.
