• Longer than a school ruler, the desert kangaroo rat stretches over 12 inches (300 mm) and tips the scales at more than 3.2 oz (91 g). Its body is built for the sand, with four toes on each hind foot and long hairs covering them, while the tail, over half the total length, sports white-tipped guard hairs. Males are about 2.5 % larger than females, weighing up to 148 g compared with females at up to 141 g. Leap six body lengths into the air to dodge predators.
• Only loose, wind-blown sand will do, desert kangaroo rats live exclusively in dunes, building burrows under mounds 6-9 m across. Colonies consist of 6-12 widely spaced burrows, each a maze of sloping entrances and sealed chambers where they store mesquite pods and seeds. By nesting in the hottest, driest parts of the Southwest, from Death Valley's record heat to the Great Basin's arid flats, these rodents have carved out a niche.
• When water is a luxury, desert kangaroo rats stretch it out for weeks: their water turnover time runs 2-3 weeks, meaning most of their needs are met by metabolic by-products rather than drinking. Their kidneys sport unusually long papillae, and the longest nasal cavity of any kangaroo rat, both adaptations that concentrate urine and reclaim moisture from exhaled air. This physiological toolkit lets them survive where rain may not fall for months.
• A split-second can mean life or death: high-speed video shows rattlesnakes launch strikes in under 100 ms, yet desert kangaroo rats react in about 70 ms and sometimes fire a jump within 38 ms of the snake's move. Their near-vertical leaps cover more than six body lengths, and a mid-air kick can knock a sidewinder off target, letting the rat escape venomous bites. These lightning-fast reflexes illustrate how bipedalism and explosive power have turned a tiny rodent into a snake-dodging ninja.
• Unlike many of its cousins, the desert kangaroo rat doesn't drum to chat. When it hears another rat's drum, it bursts from its burrow to chase the intruder or engage in a rollover fight.
