Fascinating facts about the Jersey Tiger

• A moth that roars at predators — the Jersey tiger produces ultrasonic clicks from tymbals (drum-like organs) in its abdomen at over 80 decibels, a sound cats and owls hear as physical pain. It's one of the few moths that fights back rather than flee, and the clicking doubles as a chemical warning: its black-and-red wings advertise a body laced with toxins from the plants it ate as a caterpillar.
• Its range has shifted north by nearly 300 kilometres in the last 50 years. Once found only in southern France and Spain, the Jersey tiger is now breeding in Britain (where the Channel Islands gave it its common name), Germany, and central Europe. Climate warming has unrolled a new map for the species, turning it from a Mediterranean rarity into an expanding European resident.
• The caterpillar is a generalist feeder armed with urticating hairs — fine bristles that inject irritating compounds into anything that touches them. A single larva can demolish leaves from dozens of plant species (nettles, plantains, ragwort), giving it survival flexibility that many specialists lack. Those same defensive hairs later provide the adults with chemical weaponry without the moth ever hunting or synthesizing new toxins.
• Males use ultraviolet vision and pheromone plumes to find females in the darkness — a two-channel mate-finding system so tuned that a male can locate a receptive female from 30 metres away. His antennae (each bearing thousands of receptor cells) lock onto a single molecule of her scent drifting on air currents, while his compound eyes detect her UV-reflective wing patches that glow like beacons in a world humans cannot see.
• Adult Jersey tigers don't eat — their mouthparts have withered to vestigial nubs over evolutionary time, leaving them with days to a week of life to find a mate and reproduce. All their energy came from caterpillar stage gluttony. This trade-off (maximum fecundity in exchange for zero adult feeding) reveals a life strategy where the entire adult body is engineered as a reproduction machine, not a refuelling station.
