• A Javan surili's stomach is divided into four chambers, each fermented by different bacteria colonies—turning leaves into liquid nutrition the way a cow's stomach works, but the surili does it while hanging upside-down in the canopy. Their digestive system is so specialized that they can extract more calories from unripe fruit and tough leaves than animals 10 times their size. This 6-kilogram monkey has solved the fuel problem that usually forces primates to compete with 50 others for the ripest fruit; instead, they eat what nobody else touches.
• Javan surlilis live in troops of 4 to 15 individuals led by a single male, but he doesn't lead hunts or fights—he leads the group through an invisible mental map of the forest that takes years to learn. A troop's home range spans roughly 20 to 30 hectares of dense rainforest, and each monkey memorizes which fig trees fruit on what schedule, where water pools sit in drought, and which branches hold its weight at what seasons. When a young male grows up and leaves to join another group, he's essentially migrating into a forest he's never learned.
• Only around 4,000 Javan surlilis remain in the wild today, scattered across three forest fragments in West Java as isolated as islands in an ocean. In the 1970s, when scientists first studied them seriously, there were ten times that number. The species vanished from 90 per cent of its historical range in less than 50 years—a collapse so sudden that each surviving population is now genetically bottlenecked, with almost no diversity left to adapt to climate shifts or disease.
• A newborn Javan surili is born with pale fur and is carried by its mother for the first month before other females in the troop begin 'allomothering'—taking turns holding and grooming the infant as if it were their own. This shared childcare is rare among primates and may be key to why the species thrives in tight family groups; infants learn the forest's secrets from multiple teachers, not just one mother. It also means a young surili that loses its mother can survive.
• The Javan surili's high-pitched, cat-like call can be heard up to 500 metres away through dense rainforest—a distance that becomes a lifeline in fragmented forests where groups are separated by logged clearings. Scientists use playback recordings of these calls to monitor where populations survive and whether new groups have established connections across corridors. The sound that evolved to keep a troop together in the canopy has become the clearest signal of whether the species itself will make it.
