• A Javan hawk eagle can spot a 100-gram flying lemur from half a kilometre away while perched motionless in the canopy. Their eyes are 16 times more powerful than human vision — a sensory gift that comes at a cost: they live in one of Earth's most fragmented forests, where prey is vanishing faster than they can hunt. Fewer than 600 breeding pairs remain on the island of Java, clinging to rainforest patches shrinking by the day.
• Pairs mate for life and return to the same nest year after year, often rebuilding it to the size of a dining table. A single breeding attempt takes nine months from courtship to fledging — the longest breeding cycle of any hawk eagle. If a chick dies, the parents won't try again that year, making each nest a nine-month investment in a single chance. This slow reproduction is why logging devastates them: they can't rebound fast enough to survive habitat loss.
