Fascinating facts about the Jaguar

• A jaguar's bite force reaches 1,500 PSI — the strongest bite of any big cat, and 50% more powerful than a lion's. Unlike other large cats that kill by suffocation, jaguars do something unique: they puncture directly through the skull or spine of their prey with canine teeth designed like a vise. This is why indigenous peoples called them 'he who kills with one leap.'
• Jaguars are the only big cats that are skilled swimmers, sometimes hunting caiman and anacondas in flooded rainforest. They'll wade chest-deep into rivers to fish, dive for prey, and cross waterways miles wide. This aquatic hunting ability is why their range stretches across wetlands where lions and tigers would never venture.
• A single jaguar needs a territory roughly the size of 25 square kilometres — an area larger than Manhattan. Males patrol this range for weeks, marking trees and rocks with scent glands, defending against rivals. When rainforests fragment into smaller patches, jaguars can't find territories big enough, and populations collapse within 10 years.
• Jaguars have a roar that carries through the rainforest for 3 kilometres on a quiet night, but they rarely use it. Instead they communicate with grunts, meows, and a distinctive 'sawing' sound made deep in the throat. A jaguar that calls out much is a jaguar that's vulnerable, so silence is the rule in a forest full of competitors.
• Between 1960 and 1970, jaguar fur was so sought after that 18,000 pelts were exported annually from the Amazon — nearly 200,000 jaguars killed in a single decade. The international fur trade ban in 1973 saved the species from extinction. Today, fewer than 173,000 remain, and cattle ranching in Central America still kills more jaguars than any other threat.
