Fascinating facts about the Io Moth

• Imagines of the Io moth have a wingspan ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 inches, which is 63 to 88 mm across. This modest size is still noticeable when the moth is in flight. Adults live only one to two weeks, so the brief adult stage is spent mostly on reproduction. They are strictly nocturnal, taking to the air during the night's peak hours.
• Female Io moths lay their eggs in clusters that contain more than twenty tiny white ova on the leaves of host plants. The eggs show large micropyle rosettes that turn black as the fertile eggs develop. After an incubation of eight to eleven days, orange larvae hatch and promptly consume their own egg shells. These early caterpillars then begin feeding on the host plant.
• When a predator approaches, both male and female Io moths flash the large black-to-bluish eyespots on each hindwing. They achieve this by shaking their wings while perched head-down or when touched, exposing the conspicuous spots. Each eyespot contains a central white patch that enhances the startling effect. This visual display forms part of their predatory defence strategy.
• Adult Io moths emerge in late morning or early afternoon and spend their brief two-week lives without eating because their mouthparts are reduced to vestiges. After eclosion they must inflate their wings with hemolymph, a process that takes about twenty minutes before they can fly, and they are strictly nocturnal, taking to the air during the night's peak hours.
• Io moth caterpillars feed on a wide range of host plants and stay together in groups throughout all five instars, often moving in single-file lines along the foliage. Young larvae are orange, but as they mature they turn bright green, develop striking red and white lateral stripes, and grow up to 7 cm long, bearing numerous urticating spines that can cause painful skin irritation.
