Fascinating facts about the Iberian Ibex

• In 2000, the last Iberian ibex died — a female struck by a falling tree in Spain. For 7 years, the species existed only in photographs and DNA samples. Then in 2003, scientists cloned her using domestic goat DNA. The clone, named Celia, lived 7 minutes. She remains the only extinct animal ever brought back to life, even briefly, rewriting what we thought possible in conservation.
• An Iberian ibex's hooves are engineered grip-pads: the outer edge is sharp keratin, the inner sole is soft and rubbery, studded with grip-pads like a climbing shoe. They scale near-vertical cliff faces that would kill any other four-legged mammal, moving sideways across stone faces steeper than 60 degrees. Other animals climb walls. These ibex turn cliffs into highways.
• In the 1970s, fewer than 50 Iberian ibex remained — hunted to the edge of extinction by Spanish and Portuguese hunters who prized them as trophies. Today, 10,000 live wild across Sierra Nevada, Sierra de Gredos, and other Spanish ranges. That recovery — from 50 to 10,000 in five decades — stands as one of Europe's greatest conservation wins, proof that extinction can be reversed if enforced protection arrives fast enough.
• Male ibex grow horns that sweep backward in an arc up to 1 metre long, carved with deep rings like a record of every year they've lived. Older males compete by rising on hind legs and crashing their horns together at speeds that would snap a human spine, yet their skulls absorb the impact without fracture. They are living battering rams built from bone so dense it feels like stone.
• The Iberian ibex disappeared from Gibraltar's Rock in 1847, hunted out by soldiers and locals. In 2022, scientists released the first ibex back onto the Rock in 175 years — animals descended from the mainland population.
