• Measuring about one metre from the tip of its tail to the top of its head, the hyacinth macaw is longer than any other parrot. This length makes it the largest parrot by overall size, and it also carries a hefty body mass of between 1.2 and 1.7 kg. Each wing spans roughly 39 to 42 cm, while the tail remains long and pointed, adding to its impressive silhouette.
• The hyacinth macaw's beak can generate about 300 psi of pressure, a force few birds can muster, allowing it to crack the toughest nuts. With this power it shatters hard shells such as coconuts, Brazil-nut pods and macadamia nuts, foods that are inaccessible to most avian species. In captivity, macadamia nuts serve as a suitable substitute because the macaw's jaw strength is uniquely capable of opening them.
• Hyacinth macaws rely almost entirely on manduvi trees for nesting, and those trees depend on the toco toucan for seed dispersal, with the toucan delivering 83 % of the tree's seeds. Nesting occurs between July and December, and in the Pantanal about 90 % of nests are built in manduvi tree cavities.
• Suitable nesting hollows only occur in manduvi trees that are about 60 years old or older. Because such ancient trees are scarce, competition for nesting sites is fierce.
