• A single African houbara can weigh as much as a newborn baby, with males ranging from 1.8 to 3.2 kg and females from 1.2 to 1.7 kg. Their bodies stretch 55-75 cm long, while their wings span up to 170 cm, making them as wide as a small car door. This size lets them cover long distances in the open desert, but also makes them easy targets for hunters and falconers, contributing to their Vulnerable status.
• Since 2014 the International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed the African houbara as Vulnerable, and a dedicated International Fund for Houbara Conservation has spent four decades blending field protection, captive breeding, and reinforcement programmes.
• During breeding, a male houbara performs a flamboyant display, raising white feathers on its head and neck while withdrawing its head, and then emits a series of 3-5 low booming notes. the species only lays two to four eggs on the ground.
• Genetic studies show the African houbara split from its close relative, MacQueen's bustard, about 430,000 years ago, while the Canary Islands subspecies diverged only 20,000-25,000 years ago.
• The African houbara inhabits the arid zones west of the Nile across the Sahara, from Morocco to Egypt, but unlike its migratory cousin, it stays put year-round.
