• A hoopoe's skull has a built-in shock absorber — spongy bone between the brain case and the beak that cushions the impact of hammering into hard earth up to 10 times per second. They hunt by drilling for grubs 15 centimetres down, their 10-centimetre beak punching through soil without a single concussion. No woodpecker mechanism needed; they've evolved a pneumatic system all their own.
• When threatened, a hoopoe unfurls a Mohawk crown of 28 feathers in a perfect fan — a posture so startling that predators often flee without a fight. But the real weapon is chemical: they produce a foul-smelling oil from their uropygial gland and smear it across their plumage. A bird ringed in Morocco has been recaptured 4,000 kilometres away in Mali. They navigate by landmarks and perhaps magnetoreception, following invisible highways that shift with seasons — routes no human knew existed until bird banding revealed them.
